First Blockchain in overseas operations

Blockchain is a register that allows information to be stored and exchanged in a secure, reliable and non-modifiable way, such as a cadastre or a notarial register.
In other words, changes can’t be made : once the information is written, it can only be read.


The SIMMT (Integrated Structure for the Maintenance in Operational Condition of Land Equipment) is the French Land Force’s maintenance service. It is interested in additive manufacturing, especially for spares in external operations (OPEX).

Indeed,the supply chain can be extremely long several thousand kilometers from the metropolis. Thus, many materials are immobilized while spare parts are imported from mainland.

This stake raises certain issues:

How can be organized  the circulation of information between the field operator, the SIMMT and manufacturers, but also their subcontractors ? 

How to secure all those transactions?

Once this new process had been diagnosed, and the need to rethink the economic model realized, Vistory made a proposal.

Using a blockchain to connect all the actors: the ground operator, the BSMAT de Tulle, the SIMMT central management, the printer manufacturer (PRODWAYS) and the manufacturers who originally manufactured the spare parts and supplied the 3D files.

Those actors, who have divergent interests, are facing difficulty sharing information, especially when it covers intellectual property and associated remuneration questions.

Thus, the SIMMT decided to launch a prototype (POC: proof of concept) from January. 

In order to be deployed in February at the latest, it woud involve all stakeholders in purpose to get the first feedback from April.

Above all, there is no notary or central bank: each consortium’s members has the same servers as the others. All information written once is on all the other servers.

Thus, everyone is guaranteed to see exactly the same information while being sure it is unalterable. The blockchain used by Vistory is built on an Ethereum base, allowing smart contracts (microprograms automatically executing conditions defined upstream).


Such an experiment opens the door to two future developments.

The first aims to widen the scope of the experiment by increasing the number of pieces produced, of theaters, manufacturers, and including subcontractors. Thus, in order to prepare for future industrialization, the model’s viability should be verified on larger samples.

This industrialization constitutes a second challenge. Covering a technical dimension (especially cloud computing) and a contractual dimension (how to include additive  manufacturing clauses in the cycle of spare parts from the contract signature).
This will be effective for external operations and in current service maintenance , in mainland France.
